Collateral ligament injuries of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb: a treatment algorithm
The management of injury to the ulnar and radial collateral ligaments at the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb is complex. Treatment is dependent upon a number of factors with a wide variety of options for each ligament. Inadequate treatment has the potential to lead to a poor functional outcome. We present the relevant clinical anatomy, mechanism of injury, methods of treatment available ...
متن کامل"Gamekeeper's thumb". Injuries of the ulnar collateral ligament of the metacarpophalangeal joint.
The condition of chronic instability of the MP (metacarpophalangeal) joint of the thumb, may be the resultant of chronic strain of the ulnar collateral ligament of the MP joint. This condition was described in Scottish gamekeepers who used to kill hunted animals by a special manoeuvre subjecting the thumb to extension abduction force, and was termed "Gamekeeper's Thumb" (Campbell, 1955). Nowada...
متن کاملEvaluation and treatment of injuries of the ulnar collateral ligament of the thumb metacarpophalangeal joint.
Injuries of the ulnar collateral ligament of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb are very common. A review of the literature regarding the pertinent anatomy, injury mechanism, diagnostic modalities, and treatment options may yield a better understanding for future management.
متن کاملVolar dislocation of the thumb metacarpophalangeal joint with acute repair of the ulnar collateral ligament
Volar dislocations of the thumb metacarpophalangeal joint are uncommon and can be associated with rupture of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL). We report a case where a volar thumb dislocation was successfully closed reduced, but instability required open repair of the UCL. Early motion protocol helped achieve favorable results.
متن کاملInjuries to the Ulnar Collateral Ligament of the Thumb Metacarpophalangeal Joint.
Injuries to the ulnar collateral ligament of the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint of the thumb are relatively common. When an incomplete rupture is present, valgus stress testing with the MCP joint positioned in extension reveals minimal or no instability (less than 30 degrees of laxity or less than 15 degrees more laxity than in the noninjured thumb). When a complete rupture is present, valgus ...
